Workcamp Obedska Bara
September 24, 2009 v 12:26 pmIn the last spring (spring 2009), me and Bara we discussed very deeply the programme of our forthcoming summer. We wanted to be together and enjoy something new. Firstly we decided to apply for the work as campleaders at the Camp Shohola (US, Pensilvania), where I had already been before. The whole application-procedure consisted of one telephone-call with the director of the camp, who remembered me well. Because our relationship lies in affinity, everything was absolutely smooth. To be precise, there was one obstacle: at that time I was not sure if I would be able to finish my bachelor studies in the June. If not, then it would not have been able to go to that camp. And because I usually hold rather pessimistic view, possibility of going to Shohola felt down very quickly.
The runner-up at our list of summer activities that we wanted to try was the similar summer camp like above, but in the Great Britain. The big advantage caused the fact that it was possible to be hired there just for one month (it caused no problem even if I would have failed to finish my Bachelor exams). The application procedure went without troubles, the long call with the director of the camp was very pleasant but then the contract was not offered to us. Why? Even now I do not know as I am sure there are not so many better candidates than us (we both spent time in English-speaking country, we hold CAE, we are really experienced at working with kids…). As time flew, the range of possibilities went narrower. Bara suggested the participation at the working camp. Working camp means that you work voluntarily for a good purpose (generally sayingJ). I hesitated a little bit as I preferred taking the adventurous hiking trip through the Mountains in Romania, but Bara persuaded meJ So through the Czech organisation Duha we applied for the camp in Obedska Bara,
Next day, the camp began. We arrived to the small village “Kupinovo”, located in the west from Belgrade. Just after arrival we realised that we would live in the very centre of the village in one of the local houses. That impressed me a lot. We got the information at the beginning that we would be accommodated in the local hotel, but this style of living was great deal better. We met our two coordinators, and by that time I was sure that whole camp would be OK. Both of them did their best to make our stay as pleasant as possible. The whole first evening went very smoothly in the cosy mood of introduction the members of the camp to each other. To sum up there were 2 coordinators (from
The next day we endured the work for the first time. Local guys with chainsaws were cutting down the small trees and other vegetation in one part the Obedska Bara, and we were expected to collect it and burn on the piles. It was physically-demanding, but we did it just for 5 or 6 hours a day, so no drudgeryJ. Evenings we had spare time. First few days I was tired a lot because of the sun, which hit me with its rays severely. So after the work, I enjoyed the lunch, then I took one beer and fell asleepJ. Concerning the food, we were treated as kingsJ or rather great deal better. For every lunch and dinner we commuted to the local restaurant, where the local delicacy by the local people were served. Our cook said us at the beginning that she would care of us like of her family. Well, she was right. The food was delicious. She cooked usually about 40 portions for us (I do not exaggerate now), so there was no problem to make yourself full.
After a few days I realized the well-known fact that the combination of very hot weather and beer did not lead to the freshness, so I reduced drinking (a little bit) and with Bara we started to explore Kupinovo. From my point of the view, Kupinovo ist just crazy (even if I am used to living in Želechovice, which is not ordinary village as well). In Kupinovo, you could get haircut and shaving for 3 Euro. In local chinese shop, you can buy everything (there were thing that I had not known before that such things could be selled). At the street it is no exception to see the small guy driving tractor. When I needed Internet, I asked one guy in the shop, he told me “just a few people have internet there, but one of them are my relatives.” So he took me to the house of his uncle, here I got food, drinks and of course the internet-access as well. This whole story happened just because of the fact, that I wanted to download a few pictures for the presentation of Czech Republic to the others. And so on… Kupinovo is just crazy. The weather was no so hot during the camp, which was really good for me. On the weekend, we made the trip to the Belgrade. Both our coordinators live there and that fact acted as an asset, because they were able to provide us with really interesting information. At the end of the camp, the minister of Environment responsible for the big part of Serbia came and worked with us (actually, he worked really hard). In Czech Republic it is impossible I am afraid. As time flew, our camp was going inevitably to the end. I was very satisfied as I met very interesting people and recognized the way of life in the countryside in Serbia. Right after the camp, we went to the Hungary, town of Szeged, to see our good friend, but that is a different story…
